Alain Martinez Menendez
Born in Cuba in 1973 and currently resides there.
- Graduate of The School of Fundamental Fine Arts, "Rolando Escardo", Cuba, 1988.
- Graduate of architecture, "University Central de las Villas", Cuba, 1998.
"THE MAIN INSPIRATIONS IN MY PAINTINGS ARE THE ARCHITECTURE, URBAN SPACES AND NATURAL SHAPES, I LIKE TO MIX THESE TOPICS WITH SURREALISM , SYMBOLISM, AND ATMOSPHERES, USING MOSTLY HOT COLORS. I CREATE UNREAL PLACES WHERE FANTASY AND REALITY ARE THE SAME THING."
Alain's whimsical art style fills the gap between fantasy and abstract surrealism. His combination of acrylic and pen, produces richly colored and detailed abstract pieces. Finite attention in the lines of the buildings and houses is evident of his passion for architecture. He creates a Cuba that is surreal and fun and lively.
Alain currently works as an architect in Cuba. He, Pepe, and Camilo volunteer as a team and have paintings and murals all over the country in parks, recreation centers, and youth houses. Their work is gaining popularity throughout Cuba because of this and they have been featured in several newspapers and publications. They are invited to city inaugurations and functions to add their paintings to the buildings.

Interview with Alain
“My creative universe encompasses the deepest levels of society and yet ranges all the way to the symbolic surfaces of the environmental milieu. The themes of architecture, industry and nature provide the background hues to my work, capturing the viewer’s attention in a storm of colors and lines that is all achieved in an exquisite creation with an inimitable technique. Each angle of my work allows the viewer to view a speech of deep reflection where space confines yet releases man, the principal axis, from that same dynamic which impels me in my creation.”
“My inspiration is a fundamental principle in art; each street, building, city square contained within these cities, takes you to a place of understanding my reason for painting. The articles of daily life combine with animals and strange environments in order to achieve the expression of a world visible only in canvas.”
~ Alain Menendez, September 2006
